Antioxidants Overview

WHY ARE THEY SO IMPORTANT?
Antioxidants are nutrients that protect against health-threatening "free radicals." Antioxidants neutralize "free radicals" before they can attack healthy cells and cause damage.  There are over 50 degenerative diseases in which "free radicals" are implicated, including cancer and heart disease.

WHAT ARE "FREE RADICALS?"
Every cell in your body contains atoms, with a positively charged nucleus, and negatively charged electrons surrounding them. It would look something like the sun with planets surrounding it. When your body is exposed to air pollution, cigarette smoke, chemicals, pesticides, alcohol, drugs, smog, toxic fumes, fried foods, polyunsaturated fats, etc., electrons can be pulled out of orbit. When this happens, the atom, which is missing the electron, becomes unstable and begins to grab electrons from other nearby molecules to replace it, causing chain reactions. The unstable electrons are called "free radicals," because they have been freed or liberated from where they were. The chain reactions caused by liberated electrons can send "free radicals" throughout your blood stream and body creating havoc and even possibly setting the stage for cancer, heart disease and a host of other potentially fatal diseases.

HOW "FREE RADICALS DAMAGE YOUR BODY?"
Think what would happen if a large crane were driven through the streets of Manhattan with an uncontrolled wrecking ball swinging from side to side. The skyscrapers might not fall, but they would be severely damaged. , That's similar to what 'free radicals" can do to your cells. "Free radicals" can start ricocheting oft cells damaging the cell membranes and eventually damaging intracellular structures such as the mitochondria and nucleus. Without adequate antioxidant protection, they will eventually damage DNA, actually causing mutations. These mutations may result in cancer. Damaged cell membranes also allow viruses to enter the body more freely. In the bloodstream, "free radicals" are machine-gunning microscopic shrapnel, causing injury to the lining of your arteries and blood vessels. The small nicks they cause will open the door for calcium to start accumulating at the damaged areas and arterial blockage will begin to occur, thus causing circulation, vascular and heart problems. "Free radicals" are also formed during the process of oxidation, which our body is undergoing every day. Oxidation is a natural process that occurs anytime a substance combines with oxygen - like the browning of a sliced apple or the rusting of metal. Putting lemon juice on a sliced apple will keep it from turning brown. Why? Because the antioxidants in the lemon blocks the oxidative process - it stops the formation of "free radicals:' While you can't see your own body "rusting" oxidation occurs constantly in the human body, putting your health at risk. In fact, scientists now believe that many degenerative conditions associated with aging are linked to poor antioxidant protection and low levels of antioxidants.

ALFALFA (mendicago sativa)

The parts of the alfalfa plant that are used are its leaves. In the Middle East, alfalfa is known as the “father of all herbs.” Alfalfa is one of the most nutritious plants on earth and its leaves are rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium, beta-carotene, vitamins A, B-12, C, D, E and K. Alfalfa has also been found to contain all eight essential amino acids. It even contains fluoride which can help prevent tooth decay. Alfalfa is one of the highest fibrous herbs in existence and we are unable to digest its raw leaves. For centuries, Native Americans ground alfalfa seeds to be used as flour or boiled its leaves and ate them like greens.  A "super" antioxidant rich in chlorophyll and trace minerals; alkalizes and detoxifies the body; acts as a diuretic, is anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal; lowers cholesterol levels; balances blood sugar and hormones; aids the digestive system; improves skin texture.

CO-ENZYME Q10

CoEnzyme Q10 is an essential component of the mitochondria - "the energy producing unit of the body", similar to the role of a spark plug in a car engine. CoEnzyme Q10 is found in every cell of the body, but it is most highly concentrated in heart muscle cells because they use the greatest amount of energy. Most of us have plenty of CoEnzyme Q10 until we reach the age of 30, then our bodies lose the ability to manufacture it at the same levels, so the natural supply begins to diminish. Poor eating habits, stress, infection and medication, can also affect the body's ability to provide adequate amounts. CoEnzyme Q10 is an extremely powerful antioxidant, which prevents oxidative damage to the lining of blood vessels and the muscle of the heart. CoEnzyme Q10 has shown to offer significant protection against atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), angina pectoris,  and periodontal disease.  CoEnzyme Q10 lowers blood pressure in people with hypertension; counteracts histamine, and is therefore, beneficial for people with allergies, asthma, or respiratory disease. Studies have found that a CoEnzyme Q10 deficiency is common in people with heart disease, cardiomyopathy and high blood pressure.  More on the antioxidant CO-ENZYME Q10  See References

VITAMIN E

IMPORTANCE: Is a "super" antioxidant, which protects cells against damage caused by "free radicals". Is extremely important in the prevention of cancer and cardiovascular disease, and is useful in treating premenstrual syndrome and fibrocystic disease of the breast. Thus far, studies have shown, that Vitamin E protects against approximately eighty diseases. It prevents thick scar formation when applied topically, and accelerates the healing of burns. It reduces blood pressure, aids in preventing cataracts, relieves leg cramps, and enhances sperm production; promotes healthy skin and hair and prevents age spots; retards cellular aging due to oxidation; prevents and dissolves blood clots; slows the progression of Alzheimer's disease; significantly strengthens the immune system; supplies oxygen to the blood which is then carried to the heart and other organs thus alleviating fatigue; treats circulatory problems and prevents lung toxicity from air pollution; enhances sexual performance; improves muscle strength and stamina. Studies have shown that low levels of Vitamin E in the blood increases the risk of certain types of cancer, particularly cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, breast, prostate, lung, and colon. Studies have shown that Vitamin E improves insulin action and it exerts a number of beneficial effects that aids in preventing long-term complications of diabetes, especially cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown that those who took Vitamin E on a regular basis had a 41 % lower risk of heart disease. Other studies have shown that people with existing heart disease, who started taking 400-800 IU of Vitamin E daily, had a 70% reduction in the number of heart attacks as compared to a placebo group.

Note: There are three forms of Vitamin E on the market: (1) 100% Synthetic (2) Blended (contains 95% Synthetic and 5% Natural) (3) 100% Natural. Synthetic E is much less effective (only 5 to 20% as much biological activity) as the 100% Natural form. Synthetic Vitamin E is usually made from petroleum, turpentine, sugar, and artificial preservatives. According to the New York Academy of Sciences, synthetic Vitamin E has been shown to block the absorption of natural Vitamin E from food. The FDA allows the blended form of Vitamin E to be labeled as "Natural E" even though it only contains 5% natural products. As a result, consumers are mislead into thinking it is a 100% Natural E, when it is not! It's 95% synthetic. The 100% Natural form of Vitamin E is derived from soybeans and contains 5 times more biological activity than the synthetic form.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS: May lead to a rupture of red blood cells, loss of reproductive powers, lack of sexual vitality, abnormal fat deposits in muscles, degenerative changes in the changes in the heart and other muscles; dry skin.

It acts to filter and shield harmful blue light from the eye and protects against age-related cataracts and macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in people over 65.  Macular degeneration is a disease that destroys the central portion of the retina, the light-gathering cells at the back of the eye. As the disease progresses, the center of the field of vision begins to blur, making it difficult to read, drive, and recognize faces. Zeaxanthin and Lutein can restore macular pigment density, which declines with age.  More on the antioxidant ZEAXANTHINSee References
